More and more people are starting to watch TV on their mobile phone. Not so strange, the reason is simple: The amount of bored office clerks waiting for their bus/metro of train is huge! However, millions of iPhone and Touch users are not so fortunate and have to watch iTunes provided content, Hello? Here’s an idea: let’s be the first to supply them with the 5000 tv streams that are available online! See the potential?
5000 free tv streams?
TV broadcast networks are realizing that they can reach office workers by offering their tv steams on the internet. These legal broadcast channels include Game Network, Tv Cartoons, Horror Channel, Comedy Channel, Sci-Fi Channel, Lifestyle Network, 8 Adult channels and a lot more. [Example]
TV on the iPhone
By now you probably realize were this story is going, so let me point out the first challenge: technology. Most telco’s are providing mobile TV with DVB-H technology, something that is simply not available on the iPhone and Touch. It’s a shame, since both devices can connect to broadband with Wifi, the iPhone can even make use to 3G technology. For now, the problem seems to be the lack of proper software to watch TV online. Reason for that is that there is no software available to stream the video. However, we are at a tipping point; in a few weeks the first players (VLC and Coreplayer) will become available. Both should be able to do the job. Here is an idea: Provide the 5000 online TV streams to more then 10 million iPhone and iPod Touch (wifi) users. When we do things right, we can have millions of users within weeks from now!
I hope the public announment can take this open idea to the next level, keywords: Business model, legal aspects, opensource, iTunes store, community. If it’s compatible with VLC for Linux, I’m in (don’t use an iWhatever, but I do use a Linux-based Nokia tablet). I’m much fonder of ideas that are not constrained by platform. What I like about this idea (besides the part about the ready audience) is that it’s expanding access to machines that already have the capability.
Ouf! Which is all to say that I’ll be blogging about it this week.

This is the one technology that I am surprised has not come out yet. The big problem I see is making money off of this…it would be a fun project, but how do you monetize?
