When is the last time you went to the Cinema on Monday afternoon?

Are you a work-slave, do you believe the weekend is the best part of the week? We interpret our time off work incorrectly, “Why do we think the opposite of work is leisure, when in fact it is idleness?” (Semler, R, 2003) The fact is that we fill our leisure time with tasks; the truth is that our traditional weekend is gone since the rise of technology such as mobile phones, and email has slowly taken over our lives.

It is not uncommon for employees to work on Sunday night. If we are not working we probably are thinking about it. We should see the week as a flexible schedule that can reduce stress. Why do we allow ourselves to work on Sunday night, but we won’t even consider going to the cinema on Monday afternoon? By having the flexibility to work and play when we want, we can extend our “reservoir of talent” and live a richer, more contented life. Are you living a flexible life?

  3. I think you are right about the extension of our ‘reservoir of talent’, but some people do need some kind of structure to reduce stress…… maybe it differs for each generation.

Actually I’m gonna write my thesis about this subject in combination with the company’s structure.

  4. Ah, the changing nature of work, the organization, and the disappearing membrane that historically separates the two.

The modern corporation is a relatively new concept when looking at the whole history of human-oriented value production. We take our employee-employer relationship, the difference between work and play, and all the cultural trappings of, say, the 5-day workweek as core cultural assumptions. However, this is not, as you allude to, what might make us happiest and most productive. As emerging technology and online social behavior align better with how people produce the most value, what will the future of work look like? Will we even call it work?

“The Future of Work” by Tom Malone and various essays by Paul Graham (like this one: http://paulgraham.com/opensource.html) delve into this shift more deeply.

  5. Yeah, I don’t get people who just live for the weekend. That means that they only enjoy 2/7 part of their lives…
